Motorola has finally announced that it is taking a hard look at its Mobile Devices unit and might very well give those slackers the ol’ Freescale treatment and spin off the division as a separate company. This sort of love ‘em and leave ‘em tactic is oddly a bit of a habit with Motorola when times are bad, and times certainly have been better — Motorola’s phone unit lost $388 million this quarter, compared to $341 million in earnings a year ago. Motorola may sell the unit or spin it into its own company, which would leave Motorola with precious few intersections with the RAZR-saturated consumer, and as more of a government and enterprise business. Says Greg Brown, current president and CEO: “We are exploring ways in which our Mobile Devices Business can accelerate its recovery and retain and attract talent while enabling our shareholders to realize the value of this great franchise.” It’s a pretty odd statement for any company to make, and considerations may be further along than they sound, but either way I’ll be keeping an eye out for any developments.

There’s no more need for an expensive fireplace that takes time to clean up and maintain. This new, improved, ingenious heater was created by the Japanese so that more apartments can have that same warm and cozy feeling without a fireplace. It may look like a cross between an LCD display and a space heater, but the display part of the gadget actually shows

This gizmo may look small, but it is a powerful lifesaver. This is the SPOT satellite messenger, a GPS gadget aimed at adventurers and thrill seekers. Not only does it call in the emergency services if you’re stuck and there’s no cellphone tower for miles, but it also sends out position updates to keep friends back home updated on your expedition. It locates you via GPS, and transmits data by satellite to a control centre which routes messages on for you, and its three buttons couldn’t be simpler—”OK/Check”, “Help” and the one you’ll hopefully never click, ”911″. So everyone knows that the war between Blu-Ray and HD DVD has been incessant for quite some time… Well, good news is that the war may soon come to a, long, awaited, end.
After outselling HD DVD 10 to 1, one of the UK’s major retailers has decided to go all Blu-ray and eliminate the sadly ill-fated format from their stores this March. With HD DVD’s lousy sales and Blu-ray numbers increasing Read the rest of this entry »

Worried about springtime pollen levels, Weathernews, Inc. of Tokyo is sending out an army of robot noses to monitor allergens. Two hundred 12-inch spherical robots are being strung up across Japan, each with monitoring gear that tests levels of airborne cedar and cypress pollen. Every bot hangs outside a volunteer’s home, its “eyes” flash colors that match the current alert levels Read the rest of this entry »

I wish that I had one of these new awesome pens made by LiveScribe, when i was back taking my dreadful SAT. This new gadget is so incredibly awesome, that the user has a very minute amount of work to do.
The regular-sized pen, called the Pulse Smartpen, incorporates a microphone and tiny computer inside. Scribble an equation on a piece of paper and it will calculate the answer. It also records audio as the writer is taking notes. Combined with special “dot paper,” the pen stores the audio from that moment in time. Tap on the text later on, and the pen will play back the audio. The audio and notes also can be transferred to the computer.
Marggraff said a smart pen with 1 GB of storage which has about 100 hours of recording time, will be available in March for $149. The 2 GB pen, with 200 hours of recording time, will cost $200. It is compatible with a Windows PC Read the rest of this entry »

Alright, so everyone knows about those annoying cameras that cities across the world are putting up so they can monitor crime and invade your personal privacy, right? Well San Francisco had those installed a few years ago and just now realized they sucked. More info and a video after the jump. It seems that $900,000 just doesn’t buy what it used to. So 68 cameras, 2 seconds per grainy frame, and the aforementioned 900,000 dollars later, and what do you get? 1 arrest. Wooo. Meanwhile, Chicago has similar cameras at 30 fps that have brought great results. So maybe the Police Commish was right when he said the city council was just throwing money away? [SF Gate]
